Autumn is a particularly beautiful time of year here in the Lake District as the trees turn to shades of gold, red and russet.

The display is so lovely that some visitors come especially to see the trees – or ‘leaf peeping’ as it’s sometimes known.

We’re marking the season in the More? bakery with our Autumn Special Pumpkin Pizza.

Created by Patrick, our founder and head baker, the vegetarian pizza makes the most of in-season pumpkins. Patrick added chaat masala for its curry notes, which go so well with all members of the squash family, including pumpkin.

The pumpkin purée base is topped with whipped pesto, fior de latte mozzarella, garlic oil and chaat masala and it’s finished with fresh rocket, mild chilli flakes and Parmigiano Reggiano.

“It’s mild and subtle but it all works really well together and it’s more than the sum of its parts,” said Patrick.

The pizza has been hitting the spot for vegetarian customers and confirmed meat eaters.

Patrick added: “A lot of people have said ‘oh my goodness, that’s the best pizza I’ve ever had’.”

Order in advance from the website.

Five places for leaf peeping in the Lake District…

1 A circular walk from More? The Artisan Bakery’s location in Staveley along the banks of the River Kent and through the village of Ings will take you past Lake District scenery at its absolute best in the autumn sunshine.

1 Climb Orrest Head, the hill that first captivated the famous guidebook author Alfred Wainwright, from Windermere and be rewarded with views of England’s largest lake and its tree-fringed shores.

2 Take a stroll along the waymarked route around Derwentwater, admire the tranquil woodland and look out for red squirrels.

3 Beautiful at any time of year, Tarn Hows, between Coniston and Hawkshead, is one of the most visited spots in the Lake District and looks particularly lovely now.

5 Take the well-travelled path from Elterwater, along the river to Skelwith Bridge and admire the scenery and fast-flowing waters at Skelwith Force waterfall.
